What actually costs money
- Alcohol. The biggest hidden line. A beer is commonly AED 45–70, cocktails AED 70–120. A few drinks a night adds more than your activities.
- Hotel season. The same room swings 2–3× between July and January. See the best time to visit.
- Taxis to the Palm and Marina. Distances are longer than the map suggests.
- Brunch. Dubai’s famous Friday brunches run AED 350–700 per person.
Where it’s genuinely cheap
- Metro — a few dirhams per journey, covers Downtown and the Marina well.
- Deira food. Excellent Pakistani, Iranian and Indian meals for AED 25–40.
- Beaches. Public beaches are free and good.
- The Dubai Fountain. The city’s best sight costs nothing. More in free things to do.
Three ways to halve the bill
- Travel in shoulder season. Single biggest lever.
- Stay Downtown and use the Metro instead of taxis everywhere.
- Eat where residents eat. Old Dubai food is better and a fifth of the price.
