Dubai has a reputation as a city where everything costs money. Some of its best experiences don’t — and a couple of them beat the paid attractions outright.
1. The Dubai Fountain
The best free thing in the city and arguably the best thing full stop. Shows run every 30 minutes each evening on the lake beneath the Burj Khalifa, choreographed to music, with the tower lit above.
Stand on the lakeside promenade rather than the mall terrace, and arrive 15 minutes early for a spot at the railing.
2. The abra across Dubai Creek
A wooden boat between Deira and Bur Dubai for AED 1 — effectively free, and the most authentic thing you’ll do in Dubai. Sit at the back, cross at dusk, and it’s better than most paid boat tours.
3. The souks
Gold, spice and textile souks in Deira cost nothing to wander. Go in the evening when they come alive. Buy nothing if you like — the atmosphere is the point.
4. Public beaches
JBR Beach, Kite Beach and Sunset Beach are free, clean and well-maintained, with showers and cafés nearby. Kite Beach has the Burj Al Arab in view — the photograph people pay for at hotels.
5. Al Fahidi historical district
Restored wind-tower houses, narrow lanes and courtyards — the closest thing Dubai has to an old town, and free to walk. Some museums inside charge a nominal amount; the district itself doesn’t.
6. Dubai Marina walk
Three kilometres of waterfront promenade past yachts and towers. Best at sunset, and one of the few genuinely pleasant long walks in the city.
7. The Dubai Mall aquarium wall
You can pay to go inside. Or you can stand in the mall and look at the 32-metre viewing panel for free, which is most of the experience.
8. Jumeirah Mosque, from outside
One of the few mosques open to non-Muslims, and striking from the street. Guided tours are paid, but the exterior and the surrounding area cost nothing.
9. Watching the Burj Khalifa light show
The tower’s LED façade runs shows through the evening, visible from anywhere in Downtown. Free, and the best angle is from outside, not from the observation deck — one reason to read is the Burj Khalifa worth it before buying tickets.
10. Global Village, off-season browsing
Entry is a small fee, but walking the outdoor areas of Downtown, Marina and JBR in winter evenings costs nothing and is when the city is at its most pleasant.

Born and raised in the Middle East, I’ve spent most of my adult life travelling — more than 40 countries so far. I write these guides the way I’d explain them to a friend: real prices, honest opinions, and a straight answer when the cheaper option is the better one.
