Short answer: four days. Three works if you skip the desert, five if you want a beach day that is not rushed. Beyond six, Dubai starts repeating itself unless you are there to lie by a pool.
Why the number is higher than the sightseeing list suggests
Dubai’s attractions would fit into two days if they were next to each other. They are not. The city runs roughly 40km along the coast, and the gap between Deira in the old centre and the Marina at the far end is a genuine 45-minute drive in light traffic and well over an hour in the evening.
Then there is the heat. For six months of the year, walking between places is not realistic, which turns every short hop into a taxi ride. That is the real reason three days feels tight: you lose two to three hours a day to moving around, and no itinerary that ignores this survives contact with the city.
What each day actually buys you
Day one — Downtown. Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, the fountain show. This is the day everyone comes for and it works. Book the tower for late afternoon so you get daylight, sunset and the lit city from one ticket.
Day two — old Dubai. Deira, the gold and spice souks, the abra crossing over the creek, Al Fahidi. This is the half of Dubai most three-day itineraries drop, and it is the half people remember. It costs almost nothing.
Day three — the desert. A safari eats an afternoon and evening. It cannot be combined with anything else and it should not be rushed.
Day four — beach or Palm. JBR, Kite Beach or a hotel day. This is the day that turns a busy trip into a holiday, and it is the one people most regret cutting.
Day five — slack. Abu Dhabi and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, or a waterpark, or nothing at all.
Three days: what you give up
Three days is the most common length and it works, provided you accept one loss. Realistically you get Downtown, old Dubai and the desert — and no beach. If a beach day is the point of the trip for you, three days is the wrong length and a fourth day is better value than any upgrade you could buy.
When more days stop helping
Past six days, Dubai gives diminishing returns unless you are there for a resort holiday rather than a city one. The attractions do not deepen the way they do in Rome or Bangkok; they are mostly single-visit experiences. A week is a resort week with a city attached, which is a perfectly good trip — just be honest with yourself about which one you are booking, because it changes where you should stay.
The stopover version
Dubai is a common long-haul stopover and 24 hours is genuinely enough for a decent one: Downtown in the late afternoon, the fountain at dusk, dinner, then the souks the next morning before your flight. Skip the desert on a stopover — it does not fit and a rushed safari is a poor version of a good thing.
