Phuket International Airport (HKT) is in the far north of the island. Most beach hotels are 45–90 minutes away. How you cover that distance makes a real difference to both cost and stress after a long flight. Here’s how each option compares.

Quick verdict
– Families, late-night arrivals, groups of 3+: pre-book a private transfer. It’s a fixed price, a driver waits with your name, and there’s no haggling.
– Solo travellers or couples on a budget arriving in daytime: the Phuket Smart Bus or the airport minibus.
– Walk-up option: the official airport taxi/limousine counter in arrivals. It’s convenient but usually the priciest per km.

Distances from the airport (approx.)
- Patong: about 40 km. Kata/Karon: about 50 km. Kamala: about 30 km. Phuket Town: about 32 km. Mai Khao/Nai Yang: under 15 km.
If you’re staying in Nai Yang or Mai Khao, any taxi is short and cheap, so pre-booking matters less.
Why pre-booking is usually worth it
- Fixed price. No meter debate, and no “flat fare” quoted after you’re tired.
- Meet and greet. Delayed flights are tracked, which matters for the many late-night arrivals from Europe and India.
- Child seats can be requested. They’re rarely available at the counter.
- Price per head for 3–4 people often comes close to the shared minibus price.
Scams and annoyances to avoid
- Drivers who stop at a “travel agency” on the way to sell tours. Politely decline and ask to go straight to the hotel.
- Unlicensed touts inside the terminal. Use the official counters or your pre-booked driver.
- Agree which hotel entrance you need first. Patong’s one-way streets add time.
The Phuket Smart Bus in detail
The Smart Bus runs on a fixed route from the airport down the west coast through Patong and on to Rawai. It charges a flat THB 100 per person wherever you get off, and children under 6 ride free with a paying adult. You can pay in cash, with Thai QR (PromptPay), or by tapping a contactless Visa, Mastercard or JCB card. Buses are air-conditioned and have luggage space, but they only stop at marked stops on the main road. If your hotel is up a hill in Kata or Kamala, expect a walk or a short tuk-tuk at the other end. Check the official timetable before you fly, because buses don’t run through the night.
Which option for which beach?
- Patong: the Smart Bus works well if your hotel is near Beach Road. Otherwise use a private car, especially on busy evenings.
- Kata and Karon: a long ride. A private car saves time with luggage, and a minibus is the budget option.
- Kamala and Surin: closer to the airport, so a pre-booked car is usually good value.
- Phuket Town: the government airport bus to town is the cheapest. Otherwise take a car.
- Khao Lak (mainland, north): this is a separate journey of about 1.5–2 hours. Book a private transfer in advance.
Onward to the islands
Heading to Phi Phi or Krabi? Ferries leave from Rassada Pier on the east side of Phuket. 12Go sells combined minibus + ferry tickets with hotel pickup, which saves arranging two legs separately. See our honest take on whether a Phi Phi day trip is worth it before you book.
Getting back to the airport
Hotels will arrange a car, often at a similar price to the counter. Booking the return leg with your transfer provider at the same time is often simpler, so compare it with the hotel’s price. Allow 90+ minutes from Patong in afternoon traffic.
