Yes as a day trip. Mostly no as a place to stay. And the tour you book changes the experience more than anything else.
What you’re going for
The scenery is genuinely world-class — sheer limestone cliffs dropping into turquoise water, and Maya Bay, which is as striking as the photographs suggest. That part is not overhyped.
What is overhyped is the idea of having it to yourself. Phi Phi receives enormous day-trip volume from Phuket and Krabi, and the main stops are busy from mid-morning onward.
The tour type decides everything
| Type | Price | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Big ferry group tour | $30–50 | 100+ people, fixed stops, arrives at peak crowd |
| Speedboat small group | $60–100 | 20–30 people, more stops, quicker |
| Early-start premium | $90–150 | Departs at dawn, reaches Maya Bay first |
| Private longtail | $200–350 | Your route, your timing |
The early-start tours are the ones worth paying for. Arriving at Maya Bay at 7am versus 11am is the difference between the photograph you imagined and a queue.
Maya Bay, specifically
It closed for years to let the reef recover and now operates under visitor limits and time slots. Swimming is restricted in parts of the bay. It’s still beautiful — just managed, and busier than the restrictions imply.
Why staying overnight disappoints
- The main village is dense, loud and heavily built up
- Nightlife is dominated by a young party crowd — great if that’s what you want, jarring if not
- Prices are higher than mainland Krabi for lower quality
- The best scenery is around the island, not in the village
If you want to stay near this scenery, base yourself in Krabi or Railay and day-trip out.
Booking well
- Take the earliest departure available. The single biggest factor.
- Check group size — “small group” varies enormously.
- Confirm what’s included: national park fees are often extra (~400 THB).
- Avoid May–October if you can; seas are rough and trips get cancelled.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Standard sunscreen is restricted in marine parks.
Verdict
Worth it on an early small-group tour from Krabi or Phuket. Not worth it on a big midday ferry tour, and not worth basing your island time there.

Frequently asked questions
Is Phi Phi worth visiting?
As a day trip, yes — the scenery is genuinely world-class. As a base, usually not: the village is dense, loud and expensive.
Which tour should I book?
The earliest departure you can find. Arriving at Maya Bay at 7am rather than 11am is the difference between the photograph you imagined and a queue.
Can you still visit Maya Bay?
Yes, under visitor limits and time slots introduced after years of reef damage. Swimming is restricted in parts of the bay.
Where should I stay instead?
Krabi or Railay, and day-trip out. Same scenery, better accommodation, considerably calmer.

Born and raised in the Middle East, I’ve spent most of my adult life travelling — more than 40 countries so far. I write these guides the way I’d explain them to a friend: real prices, honest opinions, and a straight answer when the cheaper option is the better one. I don’t sell tours or own hotels, which is why I can tell you what the operators won’t.
