Maldives Local Island vs Resort: Real Costs and Which to Pick

The Maldives no longer means only USD 1,000-a-night villas. Since guesthouses were allowed on inhabited “local” islands, you can visit for a fraction of the price. The experience is very different, though. Here’s how to choose.

Quick verdict
– Honeymoon, total relaxation, overwater villa: a resort.
– Budget, diving and snorkelling, meeting locals: a local island guesthouse.
– Best of both: 4–5 nights on a local island, then 2–3 nights at a resort.

Cost comparison (per night, double room)

Local island guesthouse Mid-range resort Luxury resort
Room usually the cheapest by far mid-range luxury pricing, often four figures a night
Meals local cafés, inexpensive half/full board usually needed (no restaurants outside the resort) all-inclusive common
Transfer from Malé public ferry (cheapest, slow) or shared speedboat speedboat or seaplane, charged by the resort often seaplane, which can add hundreds of dollars per person return
Alcohol Not allowed (except safari boats offshore) Yes Yes
Green Tax (per guest per night) USD 6 at guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer on inhabited islands USD 12 USD 12

Rules on local islands

Local islands are Muslim communities. Alcohol isn’t available, and you swim in a bikini only on designated “bikini beaches”. Cover shoulders and knees in the village. Most visitors find this easy, but if those rules matter to you, choose a resort.

Transfers decide your budget

At resorts the transfer is often the biggest hidden cost. Seaplanes are charged per person and only fly in daylight. Prefer a resort within speedboat range of Malé (North/South Malé Atolls) if you’re watching costs.

Best local islands for first-timers

  • Maafushi: the most developed, with many excursions. It’s busy.
  • Thulusdhoo: surf and a relaxed vibe, close to Malé.
  • Dhigurah: a long sandbank, with whale-shark trips nearby (seasonal).
  • Fulidhoo: small, quiet, with snorkelling with nurse sharks.

The split-stay plan

Spend nights 1–4 on a local island (budget plus excursions), then nights 5–7 at a resort reachable by speedboat. You get the overwater-villa photos for half the total cost of a full resort week (estimate).

What a week actually costs (couple, estimates)

These are rough illustrations for planning, not quotes. Check live prices for your dates.
Rather than quote room rates that change daily, here’s what to add up for your dates:
1. The room rate for your dates, checked live on Agoda.
2. Taxes on top of the rate: in the Maldives, tourism goods and services tax (TGST) is 17% and a Green Tax applies per guest per night (USD 12 at resorts, USD 6 at small guesthouses on inhabited islands). Check whether the price you see already includes them.
3. The meal plan: at resorts, half board or full board is usually far cheaper than paying à la carte.
4. Transfers: ask for the per-person return price before you book.
5. Excursions: snorkelling trips, sandbank picnics, diving.
In our experience, the local-island week often comes to a fraction of the resort week. Run the numbers for your own dates.

When to go

  • December–April is the dry northeast monsoon season, with the calmest seas and best visibility. It’s also the most expensive.
  • May–November is wetter with more wind. Prices drop noticeably, and some atolls have excellent manta and whale-shark seasons in these months. Ask local dive centres about your specific atoll.

Snorkelling and diving: local island vs resort

Many resorts have a house reef you can reach straight from the beach. That’s a big plus if you want to snorkel every day without booking boats. On local islands you usually need a boat trip to reach the good reefs (usually priced per person per trip). That’s still cheap, but it’s an extra cost. Divers often find dive shops on local islands better value than resort dive centres.

Getting around between islands

Government ferries are the cheapest way between Malé and nearby local islands, but they run on limited schedules and not every day. Shared speedboats are faster, run more often and cost more. Domestic flights serve the distant atolls. Plan your first and last nights around these connections. If your international flight leaves early in the morning, spend the last night in Hulhumalé, next to the airport.

Who should choose what (summary)

  • Honeymooners: a resort, at least for part of the trip. Overwater villas and privacy are the point.
  • Divers: local islands with a good dive centre give you the most dives for your money.
  • Families: resorts with kids’ clubs and shallow lagoons are easiest. Some local islands are very family-friendly too.
  • Solo travellers: local islands are social and affordable.

Common mistakes

  • Booking a seaplane resort for a late-evening arrival. Seaplanes don’t fly at night, so you may need a night in Malé or Hulhumalé.
  • Assuming “all-inclusive” covers excursions and premium drinks. Read the inclusions list.
  • Forgetting taxes and charges: 17% TGST, the per-night Green Tax, and often a service charge on resort bills.
