Santorini vs Mykonos: Which Should You Actually Book?

They’re the two most famous Greek islands, the two most expensive, and the two most often booked together by people who then realise they wanted quite different holidays.

The comparison

Santorini Mykonos
The draw The caldera view Beach clubs and nightlife
Beaches Volcanic, dark sand, mediocre Excellent, sandy
Nightlife Restaurants and sunset bars Clubs until dawn
Cost High Highest in Greece
Crowds Heavy, cruise-driven Heavy, party-driven
Best for Couples, photography, scenery Groups, nightlife, beach days

Santorini

You go for one thing and it delivers: a flooded volcanic caldera with white villages along the rim. It’s genuinely one of the great views in Europe.

What people get wrong: Santorini’s beaches are not the reason to come. They’re volcanic, dark and often windy. If you picture Greek-island sand, this isn’t the island.

The other trap is timing. Cruise ships unload into Oia daily, and between 10am and 5pm in summer the main street is shoulder to shoulder. Before 9am it’s close to empty and completely different.

Mykonos

Beautiful old town, genuinely excellent beaches, and Europe’s most concentrated island nightlife. If you want beach clubs, DJs and late nights, nowhere in Greece competes.

What people get wrong: the cost. Mykonos is dramatically more expensive than the rest of Greece — beach club sunbeds can run €100+ a pair, and dinner prices are closer to Monaco than Athens. Going without budgeting for that is the most common complaint.

It’s also windy. The Meltemi hits Mykonos hard in July and August.

Which to book

  • Honeymoon or couples trip: Santorini.
  • Group of friends, nightlife-led: Mykonos.
  • Beaches matter most: Mykonos — or better, Naxos or Milos at half the price.
  • Photography and scenery: Santorini, staying in Imerovigli.
  • Budget-conscious: neither. See which Greek islands to visit.

Doing both

Possible — they’re about 2.5 hours apart by ferry. But it’s the most expensive combination in Greece and both are at their busiest simultaneously.

Pairing one famous island with one quiet one gives a better trip for less money. Santorini and Naxos is the combination I’d book.
