Which Greek Islands Should You Visit? All Six Groups Compared

Whitewashed Greek island lane with bright flowers

Greece has around 200 inhabited islands in six groups. The useful question isn’t which is “best” but which group suits your trip — because moving between groups eats days.

The groups

Group Character Best for
Cyclades White villages, blue domes, dry and dramatic First visit, the classic image
Ionian Green, sheltered, Italian-influenced Families, sailing, calmer seas
Dodecanese Medieval towns, Turkish influence History, fewer crowds
Crete Its own world — mountains, gorges, cities Two weeks, road trips
Sporades Pine forests, clear water Quiet, greenery
Saronic Close to Athens Short trips, weekends

Pick one group per trip. The Cyclades and the Ionian are on opposite coasts and connecting them means going back through Athens.

The Cyclades, island by island

Island Character Cost
Santorini The caldera. Spectacular, crowded High
Mykonos Nightlife, beach clubs, glamour Highest
Naxos Big, green, great food and beaches Moderate
Paros Pretty towns, good balance Moderate
Milos Extraordinary coastline, quieter Moderate
Folegandros Tiny, dramatic, barely developed Moderate

The usual mistake is booking Santorini and Mykonos together — the two most expensive and most crowded islands, and quite similar in how they feel in August. Pair one famous island with one quiet one instead.

The Ionian

Greener, wetter, and much more sheltered — which is why it’s the beginner’s sailing region. Corfu for variety and history, Kefalonia for scenery, Zakynthos for beaches, Lefkada because you can drive to it.

If you’re chartering rather than staying ashore, this is where to start — see sailing the Greek islands.

How many islands?

Two in ten days. Three at most. Ferries between Cycladic islands take 30 minutes to 3 hours, run to fixed schedules, and cancel in high winds. Each hop costs half a day.
