Venice charges day-trippers an access fee on its busiest days, and it’s coming back in 2027 with more dates than before. If you’re planning a spring or summer trip to Italy, the fee affects whether you visit for the day or stay a night, which day of the week you go, and how early you book. This guide sets out the official 2027 dates the City of Venice has published, what the fee cost in 2026, who is exempt, and how to avoid paying it legally.

Quick answer
- Right now (late 2026): there is no fee. The 2026 trial ended, and the official site says that since 27 July 2026 you can visit Venice without paying or registering.
- 2027: the fee returns on 72 scheduled days between 26 March and 15 August 2027. Most are Fridays to Sundays, plus the Easter, 25 April, 1 May and 2 June holiday periods.
- Price: in 2026 it was €5 if you booked by the fourth day before your visit and €10 if you booked later. The city says the 2027 arrangements will be announced by 31 December 2026, so treat €5/€10 as the latest confirmed price, not a guaranteed 2027 one.
- Who pays: day visitors aged 14 and over entering the historic centre during fee hours. Overnight hotel guests are exempt but still need to register.
Venice access fee dates 2027 (official)
These dates come from the City of Venice’s access fee portal, cda.ve.it:
| Month | Fee days in 2027 |
|---|---|
| March | 26, 27, 28, 29 |
| April | 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 |
| May | 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30, 31 |
| June | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27 |
| July | 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 |
| August | 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15 |
The portal lists fee hours of 08:30 to 16:30 for 2027. In 2026 the hours were 08:30 to 16:00. Outside those hours, and on any day not listed, no fee applies.
How 2027 compares with earlier years
The scheme started as a trial in 2024. For 2026 the City Council approved new regulations (Council resolution no. 190 of 16 September 2025), and the fee ran on 60 non-consecutive days between 3 April and 26 July 2026, according to the City of Venice. The 2027 calendar is longer: it starts in late March and runs into mid-August, which covers the Ferragosto weekend.
How much does it cost?
Under the 2026 rules, published on the official Venezia Unica access fee page:
| When you pay | Fee per person, per day |
|---|---|
| By the fourth-to-last day before your visit | €5 |
| After that (from three days before) | €10 |
The official example: if you visit on a Sunday, booking up to and including the previous Wednesday costs €5, while booking from Thursday onwards costs €10. There are no reduced rates. Under the city’s regulations, the penalty for skipping the fee is €25 to €150, plus the €10 fee.
Tip: book as soon as your dates are fixed. The lower rate depends only on booking early, and it halves the cost for a family of day-trippers.
Who has to pay, and who doesn’t
You pay if
You are 14 or older, you enter the Città antica (the historic centre) on a fee day during fee hours, and you don’t fall into an excluded or exempt group. In practice, this mainly means day-trippers, including people staying in Mestre or on the mainland who come in for the day.
Excluded (no payment and no registration needed)
According to the City of Venice: residents of the Municipality of Venice; workers, including commuters; students at schools and universities in the historic centre or the minor islands; and people who pay IMU (property tax) in the municipality, along with their household members. Children under 14 also don’t pay.
Exempt (no payment, but you must register on cda.ve.it)
- Overnight guests at accommodation within the municipality of Venice. This is the big one for tourists.
- Residents of the Veneto region.
- People travelling for medical treatment, and people taking part in sports competitions.
- Spouses, partners and relatives (up to the third degree) of residents of the fee area, plus other categories listed in the regulations.
Registering gives you a QR code. Keep it on your phone, because inspectors at the main arrival points can ask to see it.
Where the fee applies
The fee covers the historic centre. Based on the official 2026 map notes:
- Arriving at Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia station, Tronchetto or the cruise terminal without going into the historic centre doesn’t trigger the fee.
- In 2026 the minor lagoon islands, including Murano, Burano, Torcello, the Lido and Pellestrina, were not included.
Check the 2027 map on cda.ve.it once it’s published, because the city can change these zones.
How to pay (step by step)
- Go to the official portal, cda.ve.it. Avoid look-alike sites that add a service charge.
- Choose your visit date and say whether you’re paying or claiming an exemption.
- Pay online for each person aged 14 or over.
- Save the QR code for each person, and carry ID.
Four legal ways to avoid the fee
- Stay overnight in Venice. Hotel guests in the municipality are exempt (you still register). You’ll pay the city’s separate tourist tax through your accommodation instead, but you’ll also see Venice early in the morning and in the evening, after the day-trip crowds leave.
- Visit on a weekday. Most fee days are Friday to Sunday, so a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday outside the holiday periods is usually free. Check the table above.
- Arrive after 16:30 (the 2027 hours) for an evening visit.
- Base yourself on the islands. If the 2027 rules keep the 2026 island exclusions, Murano, Burano and the Lido can be visited without the fee, as long as you don’t cross into the historic centre during fee hours.

Day trip or overnight? A quick planning checklist
- Check your date against the 2027 table first. If it isn’t a fee day, a day trip costs nothing extra, and you can skip registering.
- If it is a fee day, compare the total. For a group, multiply the fee by everyone aged 14 or over, then compare that with the price difference between a mainland hotel and one in the historic centre.
- Think about the crowds, not just the fee. Fee days are the city’s busiest days. The quietest Venice is early in the morning and late in the evening, which only overnight guests really get to see.
- Book the fee and your trains together. Booking early gets the lower fee rate and usually cheaper fast-train fares too.
- Screenshot every QR code. Mobile signal in the narrow streets can be weak, so don’t rely on loading it at the checkpoint.
Travelling with a cruise or a tour group? Ask the operator whether they register you or whether you have to do it yourself. Rules for organised groups can differ, so confirm on the official portal.
Where to stay and how to get there
If you’re combining Venice with Rome, the fast trains link the two cities. Our Italy by train vs car rental guide explains when each makes sense, and how many days in Rome helps you split your time. For the Rome leg, compare Rome hotels on Booking.com or Rome hotels on Agoda. For Venice itself, an overnight stay in the historic centre makes you exempt from the fee, as explained above.
Driving to the Dolomites or Lake Garda after Venice? Compare rental cars with DiscoverCars, and see Lake Como vs Lake Garda. You can book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi from Marco Polo airport to Piazzale Roma or your mainland hotel. Before you fly, an Airalo Italy eSIM makes it easy to show your QR code at a checkpoint, and travel insurance through Insubuy covers delays and medical costs.
