Is a Mekong Delta Day Trip Worth It? Mostly Not

Short answer: the cheap one-day group tour from Ho Chi Minh City is the most commonly disappointing thing sold in Vietnam. An overnight in Can Tho is a genuinely good trip. They are not the same experience and the price gap is smaller than you would expect.

Why the standard day tour disappoints

You leave the city around 8am, drive two hours to My Tho or Ben Tre, and spend the day on a rotation that almost every operator runs: a short boat ride, a coconut candy workshop, a honey tea stop, a sampan paddle through a canal, lunch, and a drive back. You are home by 6pm having spent five hours in a minibus.

Nothing in it is bad. It is simply a demonstration circuit, run at volume, in the part of the delta closest to the city and least representative of it. Prices are low — often 300,000–600,000 VND — and the reason is obvious once you are on it.

What the delta is actually like

The Mekong Delta is enormous, agricultural and slow. The thing worth seeing is the floating markets, which operate at dawn — principally Cai Rang near Can Tho, roughly four hours from Ho Chi Minh City.

Cai Rang is a working wholesale market on the water, busiest between about 5.30am and 7am, and largely finished by 8. No day trip from Ho Chi Minh City can reach it in time. This is the arithmetic that decides the whole question.

The trip that works

Two days, one night in Can Tho. Travel down in the afternoon, stay overnight, take a small boat out at 5am for the market, spend the morning on the smaller canals, and return in the afternoon.

Accommodation in Can Tho is inexpensive, and a private boat for a couple of hours costs little split between two or three people. The whole thing typically comes to not much more than a good day tour once you account for what you are actually getting.

If you only have one day

Then be honest about what it is: a pleasant rural interlude with some staged stops, not an insight into the delta. Choose Ben Tre over My Tho if you can — it is slightly further, marginally quieter, and the canal sections are better.

And avoid combined Cu Chi and Mekong day tours entirely. That is roughly seven hours of driving for two thin half-experiences.

When to skip it altogether

  • Short Vietnam trips. On ten days covering north and centre, the delta is the thing to cut.
  • If you have done river life elsewhere in Southeast Asia — the Mekong day tour will feel familiar.
  • April and May. Extremely hot with little shade on the water.

The verdict

Skip the day tour, or take it knowing exactly what it is. If the delta interests you, give it a night — it is one of the few places in Vietnam where the cheap version and the good version are genuinely different trips.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Mekong Delta day trip worth it?

The standard cheap day tour from Ho Chi Minh City is the most commonly disappointing thing sold in Vietnam — five hours in a minibus for a staged demonstration circuit. An overnight in Can Tho is a genuinely good trip.

Can you see the floating markets on a day trip?

No. Cai Rang, the main floating market, is near Can Tho about four hours from Ho Chi Minh City and operates from roughly 5.30am to 8am. No day trip from the city can reach it in time.

What is the best way to visit the Mekong Delta?

Two days with one night in Can Tho. Travel down in the afternoon, stay overnight, take a small boat out at 5am for Cai Rang market, then explore the smaller canals before returning.

My Tho or Ben Tre for a Mekong day tour?

Ben Tre, if you must do a day tour. It is slightly further from the city, marginally quieter, and the canal sections are better than the heavily worked My Tho circuit.

Should you combine Cu Chi and the Mekong Delta?

No. Combined tours involve roughly seven hours of driving and deliver thin versions of both. Give each its own day, or skip the Mekong if your trip is short.
