Are the Cu Chi Tunnels Worth It? Ben Duoc vs Ben Dinh

Explore the vibrant scenery on a traditional boat ride through the Mekong Delta's palm-lined waterways.

Short answer: yes, and it is the most affecting half-day near Ho Chi Minh City — but which of the two sites you visit changes the experience completely, and most tours take you to the busier one.

The two sites

Ben Dinh is closer to the city, roughly 60km, and is where the large majority of tours go. Tunnels are widened for visitors, the site is well developed, and it is busy.

Ben Duoc is around 15km further, receives a fraction of the visitors, and the tunnels are closer to original dimensions. There is also a memorial temple. Fewer operators go, and it costs slightly more in travel time.

If you have any choice, take Ben Duoc. Same history, considerably less queueing, and a more sober atmosphere — which for this particular site matters.

What it costs

Entry is roughly 125,000–150,000 VND. A half-day group tour from Ho Chi Minh City runs around 300,000–700,000 VND depending on group size, and private tours considerably more.

The speedboat option along the Saigon River costs several times a bus tour and takes about half the time. It is genuinely pleasant, but it is a transport upgrade rather than a better site visit.

What the visit involves

A propaganda-era introductory film that most visitors find jarring, a walk through the site with displays of traps and tunnel entrances, and a chance to go down a stretch of tunnel yourself. Most tours also include the shooting range, which is optional and paid separately.

The tunnel crawl is short — typically 20 to 100 metres, with exits along the way. It is hot, tight, dark and, even widened, genuinely uncomfortable. That discomfort is the point, and it is what people remember.

Who should not go down

  • Claustrophobia. Take this seriously; people do panic underground here.
  • Knee or back problems. Much of it is a duck-walk or crawl.
  • Larger builds. The widened tunnels are still narrow, and Ben Duoc more so.

You can visit the site without entering the tunnels, and it is still worthwhile.

The honest note about tone

The site is presented from one perspective, and the film in particular is a piece of period propaganda rather than a balanced account. Visitors are sometimes uncomfortable with the cheerful framing of the traps display, and with the shooting range operating next to a war memorial.

Knowing that going in helps. It does not make the site less worth visiting — the engineering and the endurance it represents are extraordinary — but it is not a neutral museum.

Half day or full day?

Half day. Combined Cu Chi and Mekong Delta full-day tours are widely sold and involve a great deal of driving for a thin version of both. If you want the Mekong, give it its own day.

The verdict

Worth it, in the morning, at Ben Duoc, as a half day. Skip the combined Mekong tour, and do not feel obliged to go underground.

Compare Cu Chi Tunnels tours — check which site the tour visits, because listings often just say “Cu Chi” and default to Ben Dinh.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Cu Chi Tunnels worth visiting?

Yes — it is the most affecting half-day near Ho Chi Minh City. The engineering and endurance it represents are extraordinary, though the site is presented from one perspective and the introductory film is period propaganda rather than a balanced account.

Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc — which Cu Chi site is better?

Ben Duoc. It is about 15km further out, receives a fraction of the visitors, has tunnels closer to original dimensions and a more sober atmosphere. Most tours default to Ben Dinh, so check before booking.

How much do the Cu Chi Tunnels cost?

Entry is roughly 125,000–150,000 VND. A half-day group tour from Ho Chi Minh City runs around 300,000–700,000 VND depending on group size. The speedboat option costs several times a bus tour.

Do you have to go inside the tunnels?

No, and the site is still worth visiting without it. The crawl is short but hot, tight and dark, and it is not advisable for anyone with claustrophobia, knee or back problems, or a larger build.

Should you combine Cu Chi with the Mekong Delta?

No. Combined full-day tours involve a lot of driving and deliver a thin version of both. Do Cu Chi as a half day and give the Mekong Delta its own day if you want it.
