Best Luxury Hotels in Hoi An: Old Town or Beach?

Hoi An has an unusually good luxury hotel market — partly because land near the old town is restricted, partly because the beach is far enough away to have supported separate resort development. The result: you’re choosing between two quite different holidays.

The decision that matters

Old town area An Bang / Cua Dai beach
Character Heritage, walkable, lantern-lit Resort, pools, sea
To the old town Walk 10–15 min by bike or shuttle
Evenings Step out into it Need transport
Best for First visit, short stay Longer stay, families, honeymoon

Three nights or fewer: stay near the old town. Longer, or travelling with children: the beach.

What luxury costs here

Expect roughly $120–250 a night for genuinely excellent five-star, and $250–450 for the top tier. That’s a third of what comparable quality costs in Europe, and it’s the main reason to spend up in Vietnam rather than economise.

At the $150 mark you’re getting a pool villa or a large room with a balcony, full breakfast, and service that would cost triple in Bali or Thailand.

What to look for

  • A free old-town shuttle if you’re staying at the beach. Nearly all good resorts run one; confirm the timetable, not just that it exists.
  • Bicycles included. Standard at better properties. Hoi An is flat and cycling is the nicest way to move around.
  • River-facing vs street-facing in the old town. Street-facing rooms in the centre are noisy until late.
  • Pool size. Boutique old-town hotels often have small plunge pools. Fine for a dip, not for swimming.

Timing affects price sharply

  • Feb–April: best weather, highest prices.
  • May–Aug: hot and humid, good rates, beach at its best.
  • Oct–Nov: rainy season, real flood risk in the old town. Rates drop hard.

Flooding is worth taking seriously — the old town genuinely floods most years, and some ground-floor hotels close.

Booking notes

  • Rates move a lot between platforms here. Compare before booking.
  • Many resorts charge extra for airport transfers from Da Nang (~45 min). Ask.
  • Tailoring: hotels get commission for referrals. Their recommendation isn’t neutral.
