Is the Reunification Express Worth It? (Only One Leg Is)

Boats on the water in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

The Reunification Express runs 1,650km from Hanoi to Saigon and takes 32–36 hours end to end. Almost nobody should do the whole thing. One section of it, though, is among the best train journeys in Asia.

The honest answer

Do the Hue–Da Nang leg. Fly everything else.

That stretch takes about 3 hours, climbs the Hai Van Pass, and runs along cliffs above the sea with views you cannot get from the road. It’s cheap, it’s scenic, and it’s short enough to be a pleasure.

The rest is farmland and industrial suburbs at 45km/h.

Train vs flight

Route Train Flight Take
Hanoi → Da Nang 16–18h 1h15 Fly
Hue → Da Nang 3h — Train
Da Nang → Saigon 16–18h 1h20 Fly
Hanoi → Saigon 32–36h 2h10 Fly

Domestic flights are often $40–70. Spending 17 hours on a train to save $30 is a poor trade on a ten-day trip.

Classes, briefly

  • Soft seat — fine for the 3-hour Hue–Da Nang run. Air-conditioned, reclining.
  • 4-berth soft sleeper — the sensible overnight option if you do a long leg. Two upper, two lower; lower berths are better.
  • 6-berth hard sleeper — cheap and cramped. Only if budget is the deciding factor.
  • Private cabins on some services, worth it for two people overnight.

Book lower berths where possible, and book ahead in peak season — sleepers sell out.

What it’s actually like

Older rolling stock, functional rather than comfortable, and noticeably slower than you expect. Food on board is basic; buy provisions at the station. Toilets are acceptable at the start of a journey and less so by the end.

None of that matters for three hours. All of it matters for seventeen.

The Hai Van Pass alternative

You can do the same stretch by road — the coastal pass is a famous motorbike route, and a car transfer with photo stops is a common alternative. Different experience: better viewpoints, worse cliff-edge drama.

If you’re not confident on a motorbike, the train gives you the same coastline with none of the risk.

Verdict

Worth it as one three-hour scenic leg, not as a way to cross the country. Build Hue–Da Nang into your route, fly the long legs, and you get the best of it without losing two days.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Reunification Express worth taking?

One leg is. The three-hour Hue to Da Nang stretch over the Hai Van Pass is superb. The long legs are 16–18 hours of farmland.

Which class should I book?

Second-class air-conditioned soft sleeper for overnight journeys, and a lower berth if available — wider, with a window.

How long does the full journey take?

32–36 hours Hanoi to Saigon. A flight covers the same route in about two hours for often less money.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes in peak season. Tickets open 60 days ahead and lower berths sell out first.
