Vietnam has a reputation as a budget destination. It is — but the gap between backpacker and comfortable is smaller than people assume, and the gap between comfortable and luxury is enormous value.
Daily costs by style
| Item | Budget | Mid-range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | $12–25 | $40–80 | $150–400 |
| Food (3 meals) | $8–12 | $20–35 | $60–120 |
| Local transport | $3–6 | $8–15 | $30–60 |
| Activities | $5–15 | $20–40 | $60–150 |
| Per day | $28–58 | $88–170 | $300–730 |
The thing worth knowing
Mid-range in Vietnam buys what luxury buys in most of Europe. A $60 hotel here is a genuinely lovely boutique property with a pool and breakfast. The same money in Italy gets you a small room near the station.
That’s the real reason to go mid-range rather than budget: the step up costs perhaps $40 a day and changes the trip completely. The step from mid-range to luxury costs $200 a day and changes it far less.
Ten-day total, per person
| Budget | Mid-range | Luxury | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily × 10 | $430 | $1,290 | $5,150 |
| Internal flights (2) | $90 | $140 | $300 |
| Halong cruise (1 night) | $90 | $180 | $500 |
| Visa | $25 | $25 | $25 |
| Total | ~$635 | ~$1,635 | ~$5,975 |
Excludes international flights.
Where money disappears
- Halong cruises. The single biggest variable. Identical routes range $80 to $600 a night. See is a Halong Bay cruise worth it.
- Airport taxis. Use Grab. The difference on a Hanoi airport run can be 3×.
- Tailoring in Hoi An. Easy to walk in for one shirt and leave having ordered a suit.
- Booking tours through your hotel. Convenient, consistently 30–50% more than booking direct.
Where to spend
- Hotels. The best value line item in the country.
- Internal flights. $45 to save 15 hours is not a close call.
- A good bay cruise. Worth paying up one tier.
Where not to
- Restaurants aimed at tourists. The $2 street food is the better meal.
- Private transfers between cities. Fly instead.
- Luxury tier generally, unless you specifically want a resort week.

No. Mid-range travel runs about $88–170 a day including accommodation, food, transport and activities.
What does a 10-day trip cost?
Roughly $635 budget, $1,635 mid-range, or $5,975 luxury per person, excluding international flights.

Booking tours through your hotel. It’s consistently 30–50% more than booking directly.

About the author
Born and raised in the Middle East, I’ve spent most of my adult life travelling — more than 40 countries so far. I write these guides the way I’d explain them to a friend: real prices, honest opinions, and a straight answer when the cheaper option is the better one. I don’t sell tours or own hotels, which is why I can tell you what the operators won’t.
